Well, everybody is waiting to see if the shoot down will take place. Apparently the weather is too bad for the ships taking part in the operation to get into position.

From the Telegraph:

But waves in the Pacific may prove too big for US warships to get into a correct position to fire, an official said.

“We don’t anticipate the weather to be good enough,” he said.

“It has not been enough for us to say no but we are watching (the) weather today.”

Why did I put this on Tech? Because the Geek in me loves the idea of a satellite being smacked by a missile.

Apparently the missiles involved (SM-3) – which was designed to take out ballistic missiles – had to be modified to compensate for the satellites low temperature as opposed to the hot signature of a missile being pushed along by a rocket.

The warhead was also removed, and replaced by a solid “kinetic impact device” that would take care of the actual business of destroying the satellite.

Anyone remembering the China shootdown incident – where China took out one of it’s own satellites – will know that there was a lot of international outcry over their actions.

Apparently China and Russia has done the same here, calling the planned shoot down a “disguised military operation.”

Pot calling kettle black, I say.
