I have two reasons to be a proud South African.

Since this is a tech blog let me start with this news story from BBC:

The public perception of open source software is changing fast, said Mark Shuttleworth, who leads distribution of the Ubuntu operating system (OS).

A new version of Ubuntu, a version of the Linux OS, is released on Thursday.

Ubuntu is being deployed world wide, 50 000pc’s by the French Police, and 500 000 pc’s rolled out by Spanish Education Authorities.

Who else can’t wait for the 24th?

My second reason is completely non-tech:

In another BBC story a Chinese Arms ship has been sent packing. And good riddance too. Carrying what is believed to be 3million rounds of AK47 ammunition, 1500 RPG’s and 3000mortar rounds destined for Zimbabwe, the dock workers in Durban Harbour refused to unload it. The captain of the ship sat waiting for a positive resolution of the international debacle – but a SA court passed a motion that refused passage of the weapons through South Africa.

Bhoya Chaka baby! Dock workers up both sides of the continent are also preparing to refuse to unload the ship. I hope that boat doesn’t touch African soil. Pack your cases boys, it would seem Africa – or at least this part of the continent – is tired of war. And with good reason too.
Hey, if it weren’t for brother Bob Mugabe I would say I was proudly African…
