Right now I am fixing a friends WinXP box. The reason for me venturing back into Windowsland? A mysterious file called btkrnl.sys.

So I managed to boot into safe mode with command prompt, now I am doing a chkdsk.

After entering ls instead of dir a few times and using / instead of \ I am completely feddup.

XP is not bad, but the command prompt experience is so inferior and less flexible than the Linux kernel, and less intuitive too, that I am really glad I made the switch…

So my no 1 reason?

Our netadmin also tried LS in a windows prompt the other day. Funny as hell, since the entire office runs on XP Pro/IIS/SharePoint. Most Windowsed environment you can imagine, but for what it achieves, it’s vastly superior to Linux.

The only reason, come to think of it, I’ve ever ditched XP is because it doesn’t run PHP/Apache properly. Or, at least, Linux can do it better. But you can’t argue with a 90% marketshare.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with XP. Since SP2, it’s been the best OS I’ve ever worked on. Maybe not the most flexible, but definitely good at what it does.

What is XP good at doing? Playing games, yes. Office work? Yes.

Best of the bunch? Nope. May be best at games, but I submit that if those games were written for Linux, they would perform better.

Reviews of XP vs. Linux using benchmarking tools shows Linux outperforming XP in almost every arena.

Then we get to office work, yes XP is not a bad OS, but Ubuntu (my choice) has more tools available to the average desktop user. XP is full of holes security wise, but I am glad to say that the stability problems have been sorted.

Then we have the SP3 fiasko…
