Whenever one debates the issue of virus threats and operating systems the following comment is bound to pop up:

“Well Linux is not really less prone to virus attacks, it’s just that virus authors choose to attack the most common Operating Systems.”

If you are an Open Source pundit, you might have come across various incarnations of that argument somewhere during your travels through the intarwebs, or even during a late night drink with some fellow geeks.

Okay, so it is a week into my foray into Intrepidville, and it is not all good news. Since my entry last week on my experiences with Intrepid Ibex, two of my colleagues have also installed it on their machines.

They went the upgrade route – and while some things worked better, there was a lot of breakages. Both of them went back to Hardy, and it would seem that I am the only one soldiering on with Intrepid Ibex.

Yes it is true – IT Support can fix a lot of your issues remotely these days. Provided you have some sort of a connection to the internet we can get to your computer and fix most problems.

I had the joy of going to a client that is very far from us, three and  a half hours drive – in fact. Three hours if I pull our bakkie over my knee and spank it hard before getting in.

This happened to us recently. Today the accountant rushed over to me and asked if I could check why our ADSL usage had spiked. Now the reasons for this happening could be related to any of a ton of reasons.

One of them is stolen account details.

Now living in South Africa – with limited bandwidth thanks to Telkom and their cronies – stolen account details can be problematic. If your cap is maxed out you will soon find yourself without internet access, and if this happened to a business it could seriously mess up a person’s day.
