Yes it is true – IT Support can fix a lot of your issues remotely these days. Provided you have some sort of a connection to the internet we can get to your computer and fix most problems.
SOFTWARE related problems.
I had the joy of going to a client that is very far from us, three and a half hours drive – in fact. Three hours if I pull our bakkie over my knee and spank it hard before getting in.
So yesterday I drove there – sans spankage (the boss put in a GPS tracker so I decided to behave) – and missioned around the campus with one of the teachers. Now the network is set up in such a way that we can access all the wireless access points, routers and servers remotely.
The routers are problematic though.
Like all hardware they need energy to work. Yes even a hammer needs some form of energy input in order to perform as designed. In our case the energy comes in the form of good old electricity delivered via CAT5 with a POE injector.
So there was a network problem in one of the hostels and we went there. True to form the students had broken the aforementioned POE injector, hence no access. I asked the teacher if he had one of the spares handy I gave them for exactly such an event.
Turns out all the spares were locked up, and he did not have the key ready. Since it was 16:30 and I had a three hour drive home ahead of me – yes the I decided the bakkie was gonna get smacked – I told him to do it himself. I showed him how to do it and prepared to go clobber my bakkie when he replied:
“Okay then, so you will do this remotely for us?”
oy.
