I enjoy a lot of things. Desktop widgets generally aren’t among them. Why? I use screens with square aspect ratio’s most of the time and I like my windows to be fullscreen most of the time, so a maximised browser (where I spend most of my work-day) leaves nothing around the edges for applets that usually run in my panels in any case.

Enter screenlets – and a new appreciation for desktop widgets have been awoken in me.

To install screenlets you need only launch synaptic package manager (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager) and search for “screenlets.” Click on APPLY and after download and installation you will find the screenlet manager under System>Preferences.

Open this (there will also bee a “Screenlet Daemon” in your top panel) and you will be able to launch and manage a lot of pre-installed screenlets (desktop widgets) for your different needs.

So, if you are lucky enough to have a wide aspect-ratio screen with real-estate to spare you can now have desktop widgets to your hearts content.
