Hi Mr Dos.

I have a samsung laptop, and the keyboard drivers for it jus do not work. Will try the synaptic drivers and see...

Hallo Jaco!

I have the same problem you have - XEV does not even register the keypresses for those buttons. If you can fix THAT you are even more of a legend than I thought...

Irony: I found my brightness keys work in Linux as long as I don't use the ATI provided binary (fglrx) drivers. How's that for retarted.

Re your touch pad, I recall a certain Toshiba where I actually had to hack the kernel to ignore certain faulty bits that was reported incorrectly by the hardware, causing the MUX as a simple AUX, preventing the synaptic driver from coming up correctly. Anyway, the hardware probably supports it, if it doesn't work in Linux, let me know I'll happily take a whack at it if I can find some time.

Get the stock Synaptics touchpad drivers from the Synaptics site: http://synaptics.com/ . That'll fix the scrolling issue. Check the HP website for keyboard drivers; that should fix the Fn issues.

As for the brightness changing during loading but not once Windows is up, that's to be expected: during loading, the Windows drivers haven't taken over everything yet, so the BIOS is still handling dimming; when the video adapter drivers load, they take over from the BIOS. Go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Adjust screen brightness, and use the slider at the bottom of the page to change the brightness (until you get the Fn keys working).

> Now I want to go back to IE, and I move my mouse to the placeholder. The preview pops up showing three tabs. I click the placeholder and nothing happens. I have to move my mouse to the preview of the window I want and click on that.

Or you can Ctrl+click IE icon, and land on the last selected tab :)

Quintin, you need to set the ssh key in PuTTY itself, if I remember correctly. There's a page in the config dialog somewhere. You can also set the default username to use, so that you don't have to type it in all the time.

Hi Zerlgi

Yep I started making some screenies. I will put them on where relevant. The driver issue does not surprise me though, we have some HP's in the office, I will see if the Vista drivers work with them...

Hello int19h

I think I just need to configure Putty properly. For some reason it did not want to use my public key when I logged in, even though I imported it with Pageant. I am a fan of Putty, and am certain that once I have it configured it wil serve me as well as always.

I tried a closed source SSH client and canned it within minutes. Putty is the best for Windows IMO, and the nice thing is that there is a Linux port available for those who wants to switch...

To log onto SSH servers, use PuTTY - it's probably one of the oldest and most mature SSH clients for Windows, and widely considered to be one of the best. I haven't actually ever seen anyone use anything else for this purpose (excepting ssh that comes with Cygwin), and that includes a bunch of admins.

Q

Yesterday I tried adding a couple of few-year-old HP printers to Win7. No drivers. Okay, so Win7 is new and we got that with XP, and especially Vista. but no driver download for either V or 7 avail from HP site.

Just before leaving I pulled out my laptop running Ubuntu 9.04. Plugged in both printers. 30 seconds later a popup "your printers are configured and ready to use". Linux, it still just works.
