@Peoria, you Bluetooth dial through this? It would be great if you could share exactly how you implement that (I'm not real technical).

Hey David.

Have a look at the way the menu is set up with Mandriva - Classic Style menu, much less messy.

That is how PLCOS should have done the menu.

The distro is quite good software-wise, but a pity the main menu is so chaotic and messy. They could have made it a little more easy to use, and neater.

John, pclinuxos kde is not complicated for install and remove software. is very easy to do it even to me, a new user to linux.

for me pclinuxos is one of the best kde, i try some of them and at the end pclinuxos was the one that just work, so my opinion is base on the distros i try, mandriva, open suse, ubuntu, kubuntu etc, im using a new laptop so i want to be more sure of what i was doing, i read that pclinuxos is more stable after upgrades so i prefer to stay with the one i felt more safe lol! and is actually safe, so for newies likes me i recomended more pclinuxos than others distros.

i dont speak to much english, lol!

Hi John, thanks for the comment, I will check pardus out. I think I have read up a bit about it and was considering a review in the future.

I like the new PCLinuxOS. But I think many are not aware that the new Pardus 2009.2 are one of the best KDE distros at the moment. They not promote it so much outside of Turkey so many not know so much about it. But they got a English/international version to.
http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/

Especially install programs, remove programs and updating is easy with Pardus with their Pisi/program handler.
PCLinuxOS are little more complicated in that area. How many knows that you must look for a program called "Update-notifier" before you can update the system for example?

Hi Tony, you kinda prove something with your comments - rating an operating system is very subjective, and also very dependent on the users needs and expectations.

I cannot personally fathom giving PCLOS a better rating than Ubuntu for the following three reasons:

1 No 64bit support.
2 Lack of a proper and complete Office Suite
3 A worse rating when compared apples with apples in my compatibility test

Now, you might not need 64bit support, and you might not like OO, so those two points fall by the wayside. You might also disagree with my means of rating the operating systems, so hence a subjective input is needed when you decide which OS is the perfect one for you.

Thanks for your comment! I appreciate it.

Regards

In my book PClinuxOS is 4.5/5. Now way even on its worst day is it 2/5. I have tried them all. Ubuntu is good but it is not the be all and end all of linux. If PClinuxOS had the finances of ubuntu then all this would be moot. Mint is good but it is not as good as PCLinuxOS. Suse, Well lets just say that since they married Microsoft I have no use for them. I still have yet to see a true valid reason for some of you downing PCLinuxOS. I am still waiting.

Well, When I first try linux years ago, of various distros PCLOS 0.93 was the one who change me to a Linux user and dumb Windows xp. It was great, but then with the updates came many bugs. I think this review is good. Although I agree the menu issue repeated to much. I disagree with A Reyes, because when you are reviewing a distro -you are reviewing a distro, NOT GNU/Linux in general. And therefor comparisons have to be there too. I think If I am going to install a ditro on someone else computer an office suite is a must. Also in times like this eyecandy for the gui/common user is also a must, so the menu is important and I agree with this review. On the hardware detections stuff its more up to the kernel and linux support than of distro specifics.

Now my main computer runs Ubuntu 9.04, and its very customize to my preferences. I have not found a reason to upgrade, it works for me.
I still download and try some popular distros. And found PCLOS 2/5. Mandriva is pretier and better organize. Opensuse is more complete but more complicated sometimes. Kubuntu or mint kde are not polish enough as PCLOS.
Overall the *best eyecandy desktop: Opensuse
*Best flexibe: Ubuntu
*User Friendliness: Linux Mint
Linux Mint is the best OS out there for the masses.

Hey A Reyes you didn't hurt my feelings, apologies for the curt reply, I just woke up after sleeping (trying to get rid of a nasty head cold) and quickly typed out a reply while still sitting in bed.

I really took all the suggestions and comments to heart, I for one am not arrogant enough to believe myself or my writing or this blog to be above critique. I do take issue with blatant trolling, which you absolutely did not do btw.

I am busily working to overhaul how I approach reviews, and I have plans to include the Gnome Edition of PCLOS 2010 in the July edition of the SaGeek e-zine.

Thanks for your comments!
