A friend of mine could not get Mandriva live 2010 to boot either, and he tried both the cd and dvd version. Very Ubuntu-like, since Ubuntu 10.04 is not compatible with most ati, nvidia and intel video cards. Distros need to forget about installer guis and focus on text based installers with fail safe settings that actually work. If you can't see what you're doing, can't use the keyboard (because the distro doesn't recognize us-english qwerty keyboards) and get to the command line that would tend to be a dealbreaker.

thanx for ur review..
Thats true...I used almost all Linux Distro(both debian n rpm based). But each time, I tend back to Mandriva...I dnt know why every one saying Ubuntu as the number one desktop distro.. but in my personal experience, Mandriva beats Ubuntu:-
as
1.faster boot
2.quick response.
3.better fonts.
4.default wide range software
5. large repository media(Free DVD version)..

only point ubuntu may be better as in Graphical themes.. but its bcoz lots of fans making it for ubuntu..
Mandriva surely a gem, but need more fans n fanatics..surely..

Tip : if you lack some video and/or audio codecs (with VLC for instance), you can find them in PLF repositories. See here :

I don't know, maybe I secretly hate anything non Ubuntu and would like to ruin it?

Or maybe I just haven't gotten around to my recommendations and updating it?

I will update my recommendations list soon.

Thanks for commenting.

I am curious to know why this distro hasn't been recommended, even though you seem to be flatteting it and as it has the best scores, even far beyond Mint, even though Mandriva has communities around the world and a multilingual wiki like other distros.

Hey Max.

I was in the same boat. Switch to Mandriva, or stick to Ubuntu?

Well I had to switch to KDE for a seven day test, so I made the leap since Mandriva KDE is the best KDE4 (IMO) and I wanted to focus on the desktop environment and not fixing the niggles.

As for resisting the switch, I can identify since I also resisted - more in my case because I am loathe to leave something familiar (Ubuntu).

In the end I switched (for seven days at least) and will be giving it a fair go as I explore the ups and downs of KDE4.

Cheers!

Although a Fedora fan (apparently) by heart last week I downloaded the newest Mandriva and....
Well, I was very tempted to install the newest Mandriva Gnome Desktop. Gnome or nothing, KDE is not for me. Mandriva Gnome seems to be very up with the leading contenders: Fedora, Ubuntu and Opensuse. I dare to say that Mandriva is better than Ubuntu. Why I did not install Mandriva? Difficult to say. As said I like Fedora/Red Hat but Mandriva is equal as good. Perhaps because Mandriva is French? Or they are in difficulties, financially thus future quite bleak. In case Mandriva is for sale I would recommend Red Hat to take over the whole French mess and build on Mandriva a solid Desktop OS. Just imagine: Fedora and Mandriva together! It would be cheerio to Ubuntu.

Hi Sammy.

It is unfortunate that it won't boot - is this after install or from the live disk?

I have not had issues with booting at all.

Regards

The review makes Mandriva sound great so I downloaded to give her a spin and it won't even boot I have an HP pavilion zv5000 notebook with an AMD 64 bit Athlon processor. I know I have plenty of power, but it won't even boot. No good at all, many other Linux distros run great. Still needs work, very lacking OS.

I've been a fan of Mandriva since 2009 Spring edition. I will definitely install this and give it a test-drive once I get to fix my desktop machine.

Anyone knows if there will be a Mandriva MUD lxde 2010 Spring version any time soon?

To "improve font rendering" you may use the process developed by Anshul Jane for the previous version Mandriva 2010. Just be aware the some of the rpms you will be replacing will be older versions. You will need to remove the newer versions via rpm -e --nodeps [packagename].rpm.

Does anyone at all know of a way to improve font rendering in Mandriva? Is there a scrip to make them at least like Ubuntu's (which is still blurry), or better yet, sharp?

Thanks.

You asked about the cryptic first update with that screenshot of the "synthesis" file. In fact, at that moment, Mandriva was updating the indexes of packages on the repositories. So, it is not that cryptic, but maybe the message on the that window could be more strait forward, something like "Updating your repository [index/list]".

As about 32/64 bits, your explanation is a little bit odd but not totally wrong.

First of all, the difference between ONE and Free, additionally to what Adam explained, is really just what you get on the disk. Both ONE and Free uses the same package repositories. If you use ONE, you have proprietary free stuff on the disk (ie. NVidia Video Driver). If you choose Free, you have only opensource free stuff on the disk.
Once you've configured your repositories, you have access to the same stuff, for example you can install the proprietary NVidia video driver from Free. Even more, if you do a netinstall, you have access at install time to the hole package repository and you can install even more stuff at install time.

Your explanation of the 32-bit / 64-bit stuff is rather odd and not particularly clear...

There's three editions of Mandriva. Free, One and Powerpack. Free and Powerpack are 'traditional installer' editions; One is an installable live CD. Free is free-as-in-speech and free-as-in-beer. One is free-as-in-beer but not as-in-speech. Powerpack isn't free in either sense.

Free and Powerpack come in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, One only comes in 32-bit. This is really just to keep things simple more than anything else. It's not got anything to do with trying to get people to pay. One already comes in a bunch of versions for different desktops and languages, doubling that for 64-bit just seemed a little excessive. It's not intended to be difficult to do a 64-bit installation without paying if that's what you want to do.

Aside from that, nice review!

Your explanation of the 32-bit / 64-bit stuff is rather odd and not particularly clear…

There’s three editions of Mandriva. Free, One and Powerpack. Free and Powerpack are ‘traditional installer’ editions; One is an installable live CD. Free is free-as-in-speech and free-as-in-beer. One is free-as-in-beer but not as-in-speech. Powerpack isn’t free in either sense.

Free and Powerpack come in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, One only comes in 32-bit. This is really just to keep things simple more than anything else. It’s not got anything to do with trying to get people to pay. One already comes in a bunch of versions for different desktops and languages, doubling that for 64-bit just seemed a little excessive. It’s not intended to be difficult to do a 64-bit installation without paying if that’s what you want to do.

Aside from that, nice review!
