Part three of this series, and I am writing this from Linux Mint 9 KDE4. Already I am feeling very at home with it, and already after working heavily with quite a few KDE distros in a short timeframe I begin to realise some things that I find wrong with them are KDE specific.

Is Linux Mint 9 the KDE nirvana I am looking for?

This will only be a short writeup, my full review on Linux Mint 9 KDE will follow later in the week…

What I like

Linux Mint feels rather solid right now. I have only been using it for a few hours now, mostly spent gathering stories for the LATE EDITION of our DAILY SNIPPETS.

Predictably Firefox feels a lot more responsive.

Speed wise it seems to be a little bit quicker than openSUSE 11.3, but that can simply be very subjective.

As part of a test I will be seeing if I can migrate my Kmail over from my openSUSE install to Linux Mint.

It has some very nice power tools, a decent firewall utility and Wine comes pre-installed! Nice.

What I dislike

The KDE Network Manager. It might be more powerful than the Gnome Network Manager, but heck it is complicated.

There is no desktop switcher plasmoid by default on the panel. I need to go and find the little animal…

Too many programs. How do they fit all of that in!? (Hint: It is a live DVD…) Mandriva had a very neat Classic Menu, and openSUSE bordered on the very cluttered when I switched from Kickoff menu to Classic. I shudder to thing what Mint 9 will be like with the Classic KDE menu.

Summary.

I told you this was going to be a short writeup! I must say that first impressions of Linux Mint 9 KDE really does not feel like many smaller or “community” distro’s do.

From first impressions I can say well done Clem and guys! I cant wait to dig deeper to see if this will become my default KDE distro!
