Can technology replace human actors?

Yes. And it should, to a point. I think that animated movies and the special effects used in animation and live action movies are on a path to bring us better and better movies and experiences. I do not see overpaid actors fitting that bill.

BBC.co.uk has a nice writeup – sans my rant about overpaid actors.

Technology Makes Us Really Bad Campers

This is a story I can get behind. When I was young camping was much different than it is today. You kept your matches with in a plastic pill bottle, the biggest tech you had was possibly a portable gass lamp, and you would need to be able to read a map.

I once cut my lip during a bad fall, right through to the teeth. I carry the scar till today. No emergency cellphone back then, my dad and I took turns holding my lip together and applying a dressing until it healed.

GPS was unheard of. Firelighters? Extra weight. We made fire with what was handy, AND WE WERE HAPPY.

Facebook Deletes North Korean Account, but It Resurfaces

Ah. North Korea. It seems that you do not know that the rest of the world cannot be bent to your whims. NK set up a Facebook page, and it was promptly deleted. It has sprung up again since then (I just checked, and it is still available) and is attracting a few visitors.

Australia players given Twitter all-clear for Ashes

I am at bit of a loss who to support in this Ashes series – the foul playing Aussies, or the English team who is actually more of a World 11 than an English team. Really – get some of your own players.

Whatever my decision, I might follow some of the Aussie players on Twitter, since they are allowed to use the service, as opposed the poms who are not allowed to use it.

Okay, so I support the Australians. At least it IS the Australian team after all, and not some bunch of internationals masquerading as a national team…

Sweden defends rape charge against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange

This smells of dirty tactics.

There is a rape scandal following Julian Assange around, and the timing is very suspect.

I say release those extra 15000 documents you have, Wikileaks, and hope that you find something somewhere about who is behind this.

Researcher told Microsoft of Windows apps zero-day bugs 6 months ago

Everyone who declares Microsoft caring more for their customers and clients than the FLOSS community, read this story and stop to think – who leaves a security vulnerability unpatched for six months?

Microsoft. That’s who.

Technology’s Biggest Myths

An off the wall story here – the biggest myths about technology. While I raised my eyebrow at some of their claims (notably the one that says Internet Explorer is more secure than Firefox and Chrome – it even cites some figures I find a bit dubious) it makes for some interesting reading.

It has too little flesh around its bony ass to take too seriously. I would not base purchasing decisions on this.
