Using Unity – Day 3

(If you want to know why I started this series, start reading HERE.)

Day three, and now there are problems in paradise.

Mutter has started misbehaving under load, and I need to killall – HUP mutter once in a while to get it back to a sane resource profile.

RAM wise Unity is awesome, but the spikes in CPU usage tends to kill the interface, and often you need to wait for ten or more seconds between clicking a launcher and actual response. But there is hope…

InterviewsElzje and I really enjoyed spending time with Bridgette.  What was intended to be a interview for the blog ended up being one of the most enjoyable lunches we had in a very long time. Bridgette is one of those interesting and engaging people that make you want to explore new ideas and possibilities.

Google has a reputation of only employing the best and brightest, and Bridgette is proof of that.

For the better part of two hours we chatted with Bridgette, and afterwards I realized that I have very little interview wise to work with, but a wealth of information. And excitement for geekdom in Africa.

Below follows a loose transcript of something every aspiring geek should do at least once, lunch with Bridgette:

Today started well.

When I woke up I had that familiar numbness behind the eyes that goes with pushing out a blog post in the early AM’s before diving into bed next to my less-than-impressed darling wife.

On the upside my 3year old son was cradled in my arms, snuggling in best he could, and my daughter lay stretched out next to Elzje. Yep, today started well.

Then I got to work…

Zacon 2: First Session

Today I am live at the Zacon hacking conference.

I will be live blogging from here, don’t know yet if I will be remaining for the whol day (it will be going from 9am to 8pm.)

If this writeup seems ugly – it is. I am typing as the presenters speak so I might miss a lot and spelling will predictably be a mess. I will add and clean up as I have time.

Let’s dive in. continue reading…

…without the hardware?

MacOS is awesome, kinda, and I find the hardware that it is generally installed upon to be very good. This article started as a full blown review, but somewhere along the line it morphed into this thought experiment. Let’s see where this goes, shall we?

At my (paying) job, we largely sell Microsoft products. Windows 7, office – that kind of thing. We also sell and support other proprietary software.

We have very few enterprise level clients, most of our clients are smaller businesses or home users. Once in a while we do get a request of more expensive Microsoft products like – as was the case today – Microsoft Server 2008, or sometimes MS Exchange, MS CRM and so on. Accounting software or other niche software packages often make out part of the deal.

I think the Microsoft Licensing model, and other proprietary licenses, is a rip off, and here is why… continue reading…

Win7 and IIS 7 == Nightmare

Hi. My name is Quintin and I am a sysadmin/IT manager. From time to time I am asked to help out with some of the work that spills over from the workload of our other technicians.

I am generally OK with that, usually the stuff that I am asked to handle are a bit more advanced that the usual fare, and tend to stretch me an I come out the other side more technically adept.

Once in a while though, I get faced with a problem that causes me to break into uncontrollable swearing. I then – generally under my breath – spew vitriol at the computer screen that would not be uttered in polite company, and sometimes even in not-so-polite company.

Today was such a day…

Last night I had the most fun I had in a long time.

How often can you go out, spend time with like-minded and intelligent people, enjoy good food AND as a bonus be privy to talks and presentations by some of the leaders in your industry?

I am in search of the perfect LDE4 distro, and this is going to be a looong series. I am going through various distros, and have not found a perfect one yet.

Recently, with my review of Linux Mint KDE two of the commenters pointed out that my scoring for Mint’s WiFi did not make sense.
