Day Two. Our weapon of choice: Linux Mint 9 LXDE.

On the face of it Linux Mint LXDE is just a tweaked Lubuntu, but there is more to it than that.

It features (many) more software packages on install, codecs pre-installed, and some “heavier” packages like Thunderbird.

Review: Lubuntu 10.04

Lubuntu, the flavor of Ubuntu sporting the LXDE desktop environment. It is one of the newer kids on the block, and in some areas it shows. It does have the power of Ubuntu and its community behind it, and hence was our first selected distro for the Seven Day Lightweight Distro Challenge.

Day One of our Lightweight Distro Roundup.

Our candidate? Lubuntu, a Ubuntu flavor that uses LXDE as its desktop environment. I has everything that Ubuntu has going for it; large community support, tons of packages in the repositories and years of Ubuntu legacy and know-how.

If you talked to anyone offering Linux as an alternative to Windows a few years ago, they would tell you that Linux did not need as much resources than Windows did.

Yep, most Linux Distros where lighter than even Windows XP, and you could have yourself an operating system that was modern and extremely capable while still using your laptop from 2001.
